Vitamin D, an alternative to the vaccine?

Vitamin D, an alternative to the vaccine?

“We learned quite quickly during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic that SARS-CoV2 causes a deregulation of the renin-angiotensin system via the ACE2 receptor, the virus’s gateway into the body, causing a risk of Chain inflammatory reactions and a risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome, often fatal, ”recalls Prof. Cédric Annweiler, Head of the Geriatric Department at Angers University Hospital. “However, vitamin D has recognized anti-inflammatory effects and is involved in the regulation of the renin-angiotensin system. »

That is why, as of March 2020, he is advocating with a group of specialists for vitamin D supplementation for elderly and at-risk patients. To support this idea, CHU teams conducted a study to examine the 14-day mortality effect of high-dose vitamin D supplementation.

Another aim of this work is to specify the tolerance and safety of this supplementation in relation to the standard dose.

Within 72 hours after diagnosis

Thus, the researchers followed 260 patients. Their profile: Covid-19 patients over the age of 65 with an unfavorable profile and others aged 75 and over with no other risk factor.

The result: “The administration of the high dose of vitamin D has led to a significant and statistically significant reduction in the risk of death,” say the scientists. “And this from the sixth day after the start of treatment, that is, when the cytokine storm is likely to aggravate the disease. »

On the other hand, this administration did not cause more side effects than the standard dose.

“As an adjunct to standard Covid-19 treatments, early (within 72 hours of diagnosis) high-dose vitamin D is a simple and safe treatment,” concludes Prof Annweiler. “And to avoid serious forms in the elderly facing the emergence of new variants.” »
