The war between Russia and Ukraine has had only a marginal effect on the activity of cybercrime groups around the world, Guillaume Poupard, director general of Anssi, the agency in charge, said on Tuesday. of French cyber defense.
“The criminal phenomenon is, in my opinion, impacted on the sidelines by the conflict” and “we must not be reassured” and take advantage of it to lower our guard, said Guillaume Poupard, during a cybersecurity event organized by the group Thales in Paris. At the beginning of the conflict, the struggle within the Conti ransomware group, between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian pirates, had led to the belief that the next “disappearance of a painful actor” was to be believed, Guillaume Poupard said.
But Conti has since resurfaced, showing himself capable of “bringing down an entire country like Costa Rica that has just declared a state of emergency because of criminal attacks on his administration,” he lamented. As for the attacks from the states, Guillaume Poupard noted that there is currently “a concentration of Russian effort on Ukraine.” In the face of this offensive, “we see a very strong resilience of Ukraine, which can give hope,” he added.
