Waiting for him Macbook Air M2, which is really desirable, both for its processor and its design or its new Midnight color, Apple has just opened the floodgates. He MacBook Pro M2 they are at our door. Better yet, we were able to put a test unit in our hands.
In addition to its M2, with eight CPU cores and ten GPU cores, it has 16GB of unified memory and 1TB of storage. All this for the orderly amount of 2,289 euros, ie 690 euros more than the basic model, which is offered at 1,599 euros.
During our test, we were able to make sure that the M2 fulfilled Apple’s promises of power gain in a package, alas, unchanged, in the hope that Tim Cook’s teams would have a secret plan for explain it. But performance wasn’t the only point we wanted to look at carefully.

The heir to the M1
In November 2020, when they were launched, the MacBook Pro M1accompanied in due course again Macbook Air and the mac mini, breaking an autonomy record. Or more exactly two autonomy records, as they climbed to first place in our versatile and video autonomy tests.
- The first simulates a set of non-stop daily uses until the battery leaves the ghost.
- The second plays the same video file by streaming from a server, always until the device shuts down.
It was during these two tests that the MacBook Pro M1 had unquestionably established itself as the most durable ultraportable. With 16:57 in versatile autonomy and 14:08 in video autonomy respectively.
Between M1 and M2
Eighteen months later, what happened to the head of the food chain, in the ultraportable category? Not much. The 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 of 2020 continues to reign supreme.
In a versatile autonomy, he was followed, a year later, by the 14-inch MacBook Pro (and 15:45), which happened right in front of the 13-inch MacBook Pro of 2018, which had generated a surprise at the time with a range of 14:24 hours. Largely enough to allow him to move forward. of the 2020 MacBook Air M1, and its 1:46 p.m.
In video autonomy, the 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 of 2020 was at the top just ahead of a good second, the Galaxy Book Sin ARM version (with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx), launched in 2020. The third was none other than the MacBook Air M1.
And life was sweet and flowing quietly, until the arrival of the 14-inch MacBook Pro, which drove out the 13-inch Intel MacBook Pro (2020) in fourth place … A voluptuous tranquility again shaken by the arrival of the 13-inch MacBook Pro M2, which is, unsurprisingly, at the top of the ranking of versatile and video autonomy of ultraportables .

But let’s take a step back and broaden our comparison spectrum to all laptops, all formats combined.
Then two new competitors appear. On the one hand, the 16-inch MacBook Pro M1 Maxon the other, Lenovo’s Chromebook Ideapad Duet 5.
At 18:27, the Lenovo Chromebook is, in fact, the longest-lasting of the laptops we’ve tested with versatile battery life. It surpasses the 16-inch MacBook Pro and 5:18 p.m.
The new MacBook Pro M2 is only the third in the ranking of general purpose autonomy …
On the other hand, for the “video” counterpart, it advances to all the portable competition, whatever the format. First, the MacBook Pro M2 (and 16:01) follows the Ideapad (15:25), again, and then the MacBook Pro M1 (14:08). Both for the podium.
Fourth, the 16-inch MacBook Pro M1 Max (13:22) gives priority to Samsung’s Galaxy Book S, still in ARM version (13:05). In fifth and sixth place are the 13-inch MacBook Air M1 (11:36 am) and the 14-inch MacBook Pro M1 Pro (11:08 am), respectively.
Where are the Intel Core 12e generation?
As you may have noticed, there are no machines equipped with Core 12 processorse generation to our Autonomy Tops, while endurance is one of the promises of this new architecture. Without prejudging the ability of Intel cores to do as well as ARM chips, two relatively simple explanations seem to emerge.
For now, and to begin with, most of the computers that have passed through our hands and equipped with the best that Intel has to offer are gaming machines, which care more about performance than autonomy.
Back then, we didn’t get a chance to try out some laptops that carry Core 12e generation marked U, therefore, a low consumption, but its resistance simply was not good enough to rise to the Top 5 and even the Top 10.
MacBook Pro 16 and Lenovo Ideapad, two special cases
As we’ve seen, the 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 and M2 were defeated by its big brother and the Lenovo Ideapad. However, these two machines are, each in its own way, out of reach.
The MacBook Pro M1 Max stands out from other MacBooks with a colossal battery. Apple is flirting with the legal 100 Wh limit imposed by air safety rules. With its 99.6 Wh, the 16-inch lithium polymer battery is a monster cut to supply power to the machine even when heavy tasks are performed without being connected to the mains.
In comparison, the 14-inch MacBook Pro, Apple’s second largest laptop model, only has a 69.4 Wh …
In short, designed to run on all platforms, from smartphones to tablets and PC players, our tests leave a lot of time on Apple’s 15-inch device to highlight its strong point, balance. between power and consumption, so praised by Johny Srouji’s engineers. We won’t say that the 16-inch MacBook Pro is cheating, it’s just out of category.
Now let’s move on to the Chromebook Ideapad Duet 5, from Lenovo. We are at the other end of the spectrum, at the antipodes. This laptop is a Chromebook. Although the situation has changed a lot in recent years, these machines still occupy a segment that designates them a bit as “light” PCs, with often limited uses.
In this case, with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c SoC, without being slow or nasty, the Ideapad is light years away from the potential of the MacBook M1 or M2. To give you a test, we quickly compare the results obtained for these three platforms with a synthetic cross-platform tool, Geekbench 5.
As seen in the table above, the two Macs do not play in the same category as the Ideapad. The difference in performance in Single Core follows a proportion of 2.8 in favor of the MacBook Pro M1, and 4.4 in Multi Core, always in the same direction. And while it’s obviously more complicated than that, the worst power ratio is 3.1 times more favorable to the Lenovo machine, whose battery isn’t much smaller than that of Macs.
In short, with a substantial battery, an economical chip because it is not very powerful, the Ideapad has many possibilities to show good autonomy. And it is also very good news for those looking for this type of machines. However, because the 16-inch MacBook Pro is an alien compared to an ultraportable, the Ideapad is not comparable to ultraportable Macs.
Is the MacBook Pro M2 the king of ultraportable autonomy? Yes, always. Is it against all kinds of laptops? No, it’s a fact. However, if one thing in common unites all these machines that monopolize our Top 5 (with one exception), it is their use of an ARM chip. Apple currently has the edge with its first two generations of chips. We can’t wait to see what Qualcomm offers when it introduces more performance-oriented SoCs. Because competition is always a good source of emulation. Because if Qualcomm started the ARM PC market, Apple defined it from above. Now it’s time that the San Diego giant enters the arena seriouslybecause we will all have to win.
