UNITED KINGDOM – Known for her sense of humor despite her reserve, Queen Elizabeth II played a trick on a couple of American tourists. On the occasion of the sovereign’s platinum jubilee, her former protection officer Richard Griffin shared this funny anecdote with Sky Newsthis Friday, June 3, on the sidelines of the mass celebrated at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.
Even though she is one of the best known public figures in the world, Elizabeth II can sometimes go unnoticed. On the grounds of her royal residence in Balmoral, Scotland, “there were these two walkers coming towards us and the Queen used to stop to say‘ hello ’,” recalls Richard Griffin. “They were two Americans […] and it was clear from the moment we first stopped that they had not recognized the queen, ”he adds.
“Did you have to meet the queen?”
According to the Queen’s former officer, the man began telling them his itinerary before asking Elizabeth II where she lived. Determined not to reveal her identity, she simply replied that she lived in London but was visiting her second home, which she had been visiting since she was a child, “for 80 years”.
“Well, if you’ve been coming here for 80 years, did you have to meet the queen?” Asked the tourist, who Richard Griffin was beginning to have some doubts about. Nothing to shake Elizabeth II, who immediately replied that she had not met the sovereign but that Richard Griffin “saw her regularly.”
Asked about the queen’s personality, he replied – entering the game of Elizabeth II – that “she may be irascible at times, but she [avait] a nice sense of humor ”. This was followed by a hilarious scene, still narrated by the former bodyguard of the queen: “The man stood beside me, put his arm around my shoulder. And before I knew it, he gave his camera to the queen and asked her to take a picture of us, ”he recalls.
Tourists then took a photo with the queen who never revealed her identity to them. “After saying goodbye to them, the queen told me that she would have liked to be a little mouse the moment he would show these pictures to these American friends,” he told Sky News.
There is no doubt that since that meeting, the two tourists have had the opportunity to smile at their mistake. The anecdote, in any case, amused the internet users a lot. “You won’t hear a better anecdote about the queen all weekend,” said a reporter. Sky News.
