How to set up SIM card lock on Android phone

While you can protect your Android phone with a lock screen password and data encryption, it can still be misused if someone is after your SIM card. Fortunately, you can set up SIM card lock on Android phone and prevent your SIM card data from being misused.

SIM card lock is a feature supported by almost all smartphones and has been around for a long time. However, not many Android users use this feature to add another layer of security to their Android phones.

While a SIM card lock on an Android phone won’t prevent a thief from swapping out your SIM card for a new one, it will definitely protect your SIM card data and prevent unauthorized use of your phone plan.

Your SIM card contains information about your phone number, billing information, contacts and other data that can be misused if someone decides to remove your SIM card and put it in their device or devises other malicious ways of using your SIM card.

Set up SIM card lock on Android phone

Before proceeding with the steps to set up SIM card lock on Android phone, make sure you know the current PIN for your SIM card. You should be able to find this information on the carrier’s website or by calling your carrier.

Under no circumstances should you try to guess the SIM PIN as you may end up with a blocked SIM card if you enter an incorrect PIN three times.

After finding out the default PIN for your SIM card, follow the steps below to set up SIM card lock on Android phone.

1. On your Android phone’s home screen, tap settings

2. On the Settings screen, scroll down and tap Lock Screen and Security Option is under the section labeled “Personal” (see image below)

3. On the next screen, scroll down and tap Other security settings Possibility.

4. On the Other Security Settings screen, tap Set up the SIM card lock option (see picture below)

5. On the next screen, enable that Lock SIM card option by moving the slider to ON Position (see picture below)

6. Next you will see a popup screen, enter your stream SIM PIN and tap OK to activate the SIM card lock on your Android phone.

Change the default SIM PIN

After you enable SIM card lock on your Android phone, you need to change the default SIM PIN to a new 4-digit SIM PIN, otherwise it will be easy for everyone to use the default SIM PIN, to access your Android phone.

1. Tap on settings > Lock Screen and Security > Other security settings > Set up the SIM card lock

2. Then tap Change SIM card PIN Possibility.

3. You will see a popup screen, enter the current or Default SIM PIN and tap OK.

4. You will see another popup asking you to enter yours new pinEnter a new four-digit PIN and tap OK

5. Again, you will see a pop-up asking you to confirm your new PIN. Enter the new pin and tap OK.

6. Turn off your Android phone by pressing and holding power button until you see the “Power off” option on your phone screen. Tap on Switch off to turn off your device

Now when you restart your Android phone, you will be prompted to enter your SIM PIN. You cannot access your phone without entering the four-digit SIM PIN.

How to unlock SIM card

As mentioned above, if you enter an incorrect SIM PIN three times, your SIM card will be blocked. In this case, you may be able to unlock your SIM card by logging into your account with the network operator.

The steps to unlock the SIM card vary by carrier. However, the general idea is to log into your account and find the PIN Unlocking Key (PUK) associated with your SIM card. Once you have received the PUK code, you can unlock the SIM card by entering the PUK code.

1. Sign in to your Account with the carrier

2. Locate Unlock the SIM card option and click on it. This will open a new window or popup containing the PUK code associated with your SIM card.

3. Next enter the PUK code on your phone screen to unlock the SIM card and create a new PIN.

Note: If you enter an incorrect PUK code too many times, the SIM card will be deactivated or permanently blocked. In this case, you will need to contact your mobile operator to get a replacement SIM card.
