How to reset password in Windows 10

If you have forgotten the login password on your computer, below are the steps to reset the password for local and Microsoft user accounts on your Windows 10 computer.

The steps to reset password in Windows 10 vary depending on the version of Windows 10 installed on your computer and also the type of user account.

If your computer is running a newer version of Windows 10 (1803 and later), you should be able to recover the user account password by answering security questions, using the password reset disk, and using the control panel.

If your computer is running an older version of Windows 10 (before 1803), then you can hope to recover the password using the Control Panel and also using the password reset disk.

If you forgot Microsoft user account password, you can either switch from Microsoft to local user account or reset Microsoft password using the last method as given below.

1. Reset the password by answering security questions

If you’re using a newer version of Windows 10 (version 1803 or later), you can recover your local user account simply by answering security questions.

1. Go to the login screen on your computer and click on that right arrow.

2. You will see the message “Password is incorrect, try again”, click OK to go to the next screen.

3. On the next screen, click reset Password Possibility.

4. Answer your security questions > Enter a New Password and log in as usual by entering the new password.

2. Reset the password from the Control Panel

If you have access to your administrator account, you can reset the password for each of your local user accounts from the Control Panel.

1. Type Switchboard in the search bar and click Control Panel desktop app in the search results.

2. Go to the Control Panel screen category view and then click user accounts.

3. On the User Accounts screen, click Manage another account Possibility.

4. On the Manage Accounts screen, select the user account you want to manage.

5. Select on the next screen Change the password Possibility.

6. On the Change Password screen, enter the following New Password, confirm new passwordType Password hint and click Change Password Button.

You can now log in to this user account with the new password.

3. Reset Windows 10 password with password reset disk

The official way to reset password in Windows 10 is to use a password reset disk. This method can only be used if you have previously created a password reset disk.

1. Paste the USB drive with Password Reset Disk in the USB port your computer.

2. Go to the login screen and click the right arrow.

3. You will see the message “Password is incorrect, try again”, click OK to go to the next screen.

4. On the next screen, click reset Password Possibility.

5. Scroll down to skip security questions and click Use a password disk instead Possibility.

6. On the password reset wizard screen, click Next to start the password reset process.

7. On the next screen, select yours Disk for password reset and click Next.

9. Click on Finished to close the Forgot Password screen.

After that, you can log into your computer with the new password you just created.

4. Reset the Microsoft user account password

If you use the Microsoft password to log in to the computer, you can follow the steps below to reset your Microsoft user account password.

Visit Microsoft’s password reset Website > enter the Email-address linked to your Microsoft user account and click the Next Button.

On the next screen, select yours Email-address and click code received Button.

Once you click Get Code, Microsoft will send a verification code to your email address. Sign in to your Email-address to get the code > enter the security code and click Next.

On the next screen, type a New Password for your Microsoft account and click the Next Button.

You will see a confirmation popup that says “Your password has been reset” and you can log into your computer with this new password.
