How to remove Microsoft account from Windows 10

If you no longer want to use the Microsoft account on your computer, you can either convert the Microsoft account to a local account or remove the Microsoft account from your Windows 10 computer.

While Microsoft encourages users to sign in to their computers with a Microsoft account, many users still prefer using a local user account for their day-to-day computing needs.

A Microsoft account linked to the computer offers certain benefits that are not available for local accounts.

For example, with a Microsoft account, you can sign out of your PC remotely, lock your computer remotely, sync settings across multiple devices, and set up Find My Device to track your computer’s location if it’s lost or stolen.

However, if you don’t want to use a Microsoft account, you can either convert the Microsoft account to a local account or remove the Microsoft account from your computer.

What happens when you remove Microsoft account?

When you remove the Microsoft account, all of your data associated with the Microsoft account will be deleted, including all files located on the desktop and stored in the Documents, Pictures, Music, and Downloads folders .

Therefore, make sure you transfer all your files, photos, and other data from Microsoft account to an external storage drive or other location on your computer.

What happens when you switch from Microsoft to a local account?

If you switch from the Microsoft account to the local account, the Microsoft account is removed from the computer and you can sign in to the computer with the local account.

Any files, photos, and data available in your Microsoft account will not be deleted and will remain available on the computer through the local account.

Apps and programs that you download to your computer while using the Microsoft account remain associated with your Microsoft account and require a Microsoft account sign-in.

Also, all of your data, files, settings, and search history remain associated with your Microsoft account.

1. Remove Microsoft account from Windows 10 PC

To remove the Microsoft account, you need to sign out of the Microsoft account and sign in to the computer using a local account with administrative privileges.

1. Go to settings > accounts > select family and other people option in the left pane. In the right pane, select yours Microsoft account and click the Remove Possibility.

2. On the next screen, click Delete account and data Button.

As mentioned earlier, all data present in your Microsoft account will be deleted and the Microsoft account will be removed from your computer.

2. Convert Microsoft account to local user account in Windows 10

Sign in to the computer with the Microsoft account and follow the steps below to convert the Microsoft account to a local account with standard privileges.

Note: Before you switch from Microsoft to a local account, make sure you create a local account with administrative privileges on your computer.

1. Go to settings > accounts > select your information in the left pane. In the right pane, click Instead, sign in with a local account.

2. On the next screen, enter the password for your Microsoft account and click Next.

3. Enter on the next screen username and password for your new local user account and click Next.

4. Finally click on Sign out and you’re done to sign out of the Microsoft account and switch to the local user account.

After these steps, you can log into your computer with the local account and the Microsoft account will be removed from your computer.
