Recover Deleted Messages on iPhone or iPad
It’s not uncommon to accidentally delete a single text message or accidentally delete an entire message thread on iPhone. Therefore, the iPhone offers the possibility to set up an automatic backup of your device to iCloud.
If you have automated iCloud backups set up on your device, there is a good chance that the deleted messages are available in iCloud and can be recovered by restoring your device from iCloud backup.
Similarly, if you downloaded an iPhone backup to MacBook or Windows computer before deleting the messages, you should be able to recover deleted messages by restoring iPhone from the backup file available on your computer .
Note: All 3 methods require the current data on iPhone to be erased and replaced with old data. This can lead to the loss of current data.
1. Recover deleted message with iCloud backup
If your iPhone is set to automatically back up its data to iCloud, you should be able to recover deleted text messages using the backup file available in iCloud.
Go to settings > Tap yours Apple ID name > iCloud > iCloud backup > Check the date from Last successful iCloud backup.
Note: Only continue with the next steps if you are sure that the backup was created before deleting the messages.
After confirming that a backup is available, go to settings > General > Transfer or reset iPhone and tap Erase all content and settings.
Tap on the confirmation pop-up Delete Iphone Confirm and follow the online instructions to erase iPhone.
After all data is erased, the iPhone will boot to the “Hello” screen. Slide to the right to start setting up your iPhone.
Follow the next few on-screen instructions until you reach the Apps & Data screen. Make your selection on this screen Restore from iCloud backup Possibility.
If prompted, sign in to your iCloud account by typing AppleID, password and tap Next. On the next screen, select the iCloud backup you want to restore iPhone from.
Once your iPhone is restored using the backup file, you should find the deleted text messages back on your device.
2. Recover deleted messages on Mac using Finder
If you have previously backed up iPhone to Mac, you should be able to bring deleted messages back to your device by restoring iPhone from the backup file available on your MacBook.
Note: You need to turn off Find My iPhone to use this method.
Connect iPhone to Mac > click on the Finder icon and choose yours iPhone in the left pane. In the right pane, scroll down to the Backups section and click Restore Backup Button.
In the pop-up window, select the iPhone backup as available on your Mac and click the Restore Button.
Once the recovery process is complete, you should find the deleted messages back on your device.
3. Recover deleted messages with iTunes on Windows computer
If you have previously backed up iPhone to Windows computer, you should be able to recover the deleted messages by restoring iPhone from the backup file available on your Windows computer.
Note: You need to turn off Find My iPhone to restore iPhone using iTunes.
Connect iPhone to computer > open iTunes (if it didn’t start automatically) and click the phone Icon as it appears on your computer screen.
Then click on the summary tab in the left pane. In the right pane, click Restore iPhone Button located under the Manual Backup and Restore section.
In the pop-up window, select the fuse of the iPhone you want to use for the restore process and click the Restore Button.
Wait until the data on your iPhone is restored to your computer using the selected backup file.
The time to restore iPhone depends on the amount of data available in the backup file. Once the iPhone is restored, you should be able to see all the deleted messages on your device again.
