How to read Facebook messages without showing them

As soon as you open a Facebook message, the sender can see that you have read the message. If you don’t want to submit this information, here are several ways to read Facebook messages without showing them.

Read Facebook messages without being seen!

Facebook uses 4 different icons to indicate the status of messages on its popular social media and messaging platform.

Facebook message status icons

As you can see in the image above, the sender of a Facebook message sees a Faded blue circle with check mark when the message leaves his/her device.

Once the message has reached the recipient, the faded blue circle will turn into a Filled blue circle.

When the message is read, the blue circle disappears and the sender sees a miniature version of the contacts’ profile picture, indicating that the message has been read by the recipient.

Unlike other messaging platforms, Facebook doesn’t offer a way to turn off read receipts.

Therefore, below we offer some workarounds to read Facebook messages without “Seen” appearing in the messages.

1. Use Airplane mode

During our testing, the seen status was not displayed when reading the Facebook message after turning on airplane mode (seems to work on both iPhone and Android phones).

Seen status only appeared when we started typing a reply to the message after disabling airplane mode.

Open settings on your iPhone and activate it airplane mode by moving the switch to ON Position.

Turn on Airplane mode

After enabling Airplane mode, open Facebook messenger app and read the message. When you’re done, close the messenger app.

As mentioned above, the message seen indicator does not appear on the sender’s device until you start typing a reply to the message.

2. Read message notifications

When you receive a Facebook message, you will see a notification from Facebook on your iPhone.

Unless you’ve changed your settings, Facebook Messenger notifications show the sender’s name and part of the message.

You can view these message notifications and get an idea of the message. Seen status doesn’t appear until you tap or swipe the notification to clear the notification.

3. Use Facebook.com to view messages

The third method to read Facebook messages without showing the “Seen” status on the sender’s device is to read the messages on a Mac or Windows computer.

Visit facebook.com on your Mac or Windows computer and sign in to your Facebook account.

Once logged in, you can see messages in a small pop-up window located near the bottom-right corner of your screen.

Facebook desktop site message popup

You can read messages in this window and the seen icon will not appear unless you click on the message window.

Tip: You can also use the desktop version of Facebook on iPhone.

4. Switch to desktop mode

It’s also possible to access Facebook desktop mode right on your iPhone or Android phone and read messages without being seen by your contacts.

If you’re using an iPhone or iPad, open safari browser and visit www.facebook.com.

Once on Facebook, tap AA icon in URL and select Request desktop website option in the drop down menu.

Request desktop version option in iPhone Safari browser

This will take you to the desktop version of Facebook, after which you can log into your Facebook account and start using Facebook.

If you are using an Android phone or tablet, open Google Chrome and visit Facebook.com.

Once on Facebook, tap 3 point menu icon in the top right corner and select Request desktop version option in the drop down menu.

Request desktop site option in iPhone Chrome browser

After that, log in to your Facebook account and read Facebook messages.

Note: While all of the above methods can prevent the “seen status” from appearing on the sender’s device, your “last seen” time is still visible on Facebook.
