How to perform a soft reset or hard reset on the Kindle Fire tablet

When a device is malfunctioning or malfunctioning, it is common to soft or hard reset the device. Below are the steps to soft reset Kindle Fire and also the steps to hard reset Kindle Fire tablet.

Difference between soft and hard reset?

While both soft and hard resets are used to troubleshoot and fix faulty devices, they have their own unique effects on the device.

A soft reset basically restores the settings on a device to the factory default settings without erasing any data stored on the device. Therefore, a soft reset can be useful if the cause of problems on your device is incorrect settings.

In comparison, a hard reset completely erases all files and data from a device, returning it to the state it was in when it was first purchased. Therefore, it is important to back up the data on your device before proceeding with a hard reset.

As you can imagine, Hard Reset can come in handy in case the problems on your device are due to corrupted or corrupted files.

Soft reset for the Kindle Fire tablet

If your Kindle Fire tablet is stuck or freezing, you should always start with a soft reset or other troubleshooting methods and only try a hard reset if all other methods have failed.

Follow the steps below to soft reset Kindle Fire tablet

1. Hold down the perfomance and volume down buttons simultaneously on your Kindle Fire until it turns off.

2. Free that perfomance and volume down buttons once the Kindle Fire is completely powered off.

3. After the Kindle Fire turns off completely, wait another 10 seconds

4. Next, turn on your Kindle Fire tablet by pressing and holding power button

The steps to soft reset Kindle HD and HDX devices (first through fourth generation) are slightly different.

1. Hold down the power switch on your Kindle Fire for about 20 seconds (ignore any prompts you may see on your screen)

2. Once the Kindle Fire is completely powered off, wait about 30 seconds.

3. Next, turn on your Kindle Fire tablet by pressing power switch.

Hard reset Kindle Fire using Settings

You can try hard resetting Kindle Fire if your device is not working properly, even after performing a soft reset and trying other troubleshooting tips.

Note: Before performing a hard reset, it is important to back up the data on your device to avoid the possibility of data loss.

Make sure your device has at least 30% charge before proceeding with the Kindle Fire tablet hard reset steps below.

1. On your Kindle, swipe down from at the top of the screen and then tap settings tab (see image below)

2. On the settings screen, tap device options

Note: For a 1st or 2nd generation Kindle Fire, tap More and then tap device Possibility.

3. On the Device Options screen, tap on Reset to factory settings option (see picture below)

4. In the pop-up that appears, tap the Reset to default Option to confirm that you want to hard reset your Kindle Fire tablet.

Hard reset Kindle Fire without password

You will not be able to access the settings on your device if you lose your Kindle Fire lock screen password. In such cases, you can gain access to your device by following the steps below to hard reset Kindle Fire without password.

1. Hold down the perfomance on your Kindle Fire until you see the power off prompt on your device screen. Tap on OK to turn off your Kindle Fire.

2. Once your device is off, press and hold the perfomance and volume down at the same time until you see the Amazon logo on your device’s screen (it may take about 10-15 seconds).

If the power and volume down button combination isn’t working on your device, press and hold the perfomance and volume up buttons until you see the Amazon logo.

3. The Amazon logo will disappear after a few seconds and you will see the Amazon System Recovery screen on your Kindle Fire

4. On the Amazon System Recovery screen, use the volume down button to select Wipe data and factory reset option and then press power button to select this option.

5. On the next screen, use the volume down button to navigate Yes, delete all user information option and then press the power button to start the hard reset of your Kindle Fire tablet.
