How to change desktop wallpaper on Mac

The default desktop wallpapers on Mac are amazing. However, there are many users who get bored of looking at the same desktop background and want to change it to something different. Hence this guide that offers you the steps to change desktop wallpaper on Mac.

Change the desktop wallpaper on Mac

There are several options if you want to change the desktop wallpaper on your Mac.

The first option available is to use the Apple Photos app on your Mac or simply change the desktop background on Mac to a solid color background.

If you want to personalize your Mac, you can use a photo of your pet, child, favorite celebrity or any other image as your Mac desktop wallpaper.

Below are the steps on how to change the desktop wallpaper on Mac with a variety of options.

Follow the steps below to change the desktop wallpaper on Mac using a photo of your pet, child or any other photo in Photos app on Mac.

1. open that Photos app on your Mac and locate the photo you want to set as desktop wallpaper on Mac.

2. Double-click the photo you want to set as the desktop background on the Mac.

3. Once the photo opens, click on it share iconlocated near the top right corner of your screen (see image below)

4. From the drop-down menu that appears, click Set desktop picture

That’s it! The selected photo will now appear as the desktop wallpaper on your Mac.

If the photo or image you want to use as your Mac desktop wallpaper is on your desktop or elsewhere on your computer, follow these steps.

1. Right click on the photo located on your Mac’s desktop, then click Set desktop picture Option in the displayed context menu (see image below)

If the photo is somewhere else on your Mac, first open the folder where the photo is located and then right click on the photo and click Set desktop picture Option in the displayed context menu (see screenshot below).

Follow the steps below to change the desktop wallpaper on Mac with any photo from the web using Safari browser.

1. open that Safari browser on your Mac

2. Go to photo you want to set as the new desktop wallpaper on Mac.

3. Right click on the photo and then click Use picture as desktop picture option in the context menu (see image below).

Follow the steps below to change desktop wallpaper on Mac using Apple Photos on your Mac.

1. Click on that apple icon located in the top menu bar of your Mac and then click system settings Option in drop down menu (see image below)

2. On the System Settings screen, click Desktop and screen saver Possibility.

3. On the next screen, click Apple Option in the menu on the left if not already selected (see image below)

4. Then click on the photo you want to set as your new desktop wallpaper.

Optionally, you can select the “Change picture” option if you want your Mac to automatically change the desktop background with standard Apple photos.

If you’re concerned that displaying high-resolution desktop wallpapers is slowing down your Mac, you can set a solid color as the new desktop wallpaper.

1. Click on that apple icon in the top menu bar of your Mac, and then click system settings Option in drop down menu (see image below)

2. On the System Settings screen, click Desktop and screen saver Possibility.

3. On the next screen, expand for Apple (by clicking the down arrow next to Apple) and then clicking Solid Colors Option in the advanced list (see image below)

4. Once the color options appear, click colour you want to set as desktop wallpaper on Mac.

Note: You can create a new color by clicking Custom color button and then choose your preferred color

If you want the colors to change automatically, enable that change picture option and choose how often you want the background to change.

Fix blurry desktop background

After changing the desktop wallpaper on Mac, you may find that the image is blurry. This happens because the image is set to fill the screen, which causes it to resize. To fix this, you can follow the steps below.

1. Click on that apple icon from the top menu bar on your Mac and then click system settings Option in drop down menu (see image below)

3. On the next screen you will see your current desktop wallpaper along with a drop down menu next to it (see image below).

4. Click on that drop down menu and choose either center or tile Possibility.

  • Center: If you select Center, your wallpaper will be placed in the center of your Mac’s screen at its original size. The rest of the area is filled with a solid color.
  • Tile: As the name suggests, selecting Tile always returns the image to its original size.
