So Fabio Quartararo will stay at Yamaha. The Japanese manufacturer announced on Thursday the extension of the contract of the reigning world champion until 2024. The Frenchman thought long and hard, before re-engaging with Yamaha, being skeptical about the level of engine performance of the M1 , which makes several km / h top speed every season ahead of most other manufacturers and especially Ducati.
At the end of the 2021 season, Fabio Quartararo, just Holy World Champion, had publicly expressed reservations about the M1, believing that the delay in terms of engine power would jeopardize its chances in 2022 of retaining its title. And this despite a high-performance chassis and an ability to compensate for the lack of power in a straight line on winding circuits.
His science of driving has worked wonders so far and the Frenchman remains, a few days before the Barcelona Grand Prix (next Sunday), the leader of the world championship.
“I’m at an important point in my career”
The market has been shrinking in recent days since the announcement of Suzuki’s withdrawal from the championship to the end of the season. Two courted drivers will be on the market: Joan Mir and Alex Rins. What to confuse the tracks and make the openings at Honda and Ducati more complicated.
In addition, Fabio Quartararo’s finesse of driving allows him to make the most of the chassis of his M1, but he doesn’t know if his driving style could accommodate the brutality of the Honda and even more of the Ducati. We saw Valentino Rossi at the top of his art (in 2011 and 2012) never understanding how Ducati works.
« Yamaha believed in me from the beginning and it’s something I don’t take lightlyQuartararo said. This new agreement is an important decision and I had to think about it. I am at an important point in my career. (…) I believe in the Yamaha project and I feel very motivated. We will now be able to focus on the current season. »
Winner in Portugal this season
Fabio Quartararo arrived in MotoGP in 2019 in the tuning fork’s satellite team. In 2021, he joined the home team, retrieving Valentino Rossi’s motorcycle and left immediately imposed on the world championship, thus becoming the first Frenchman to be crowned in the queen category. He had won five GPs during the season.
This year, after eight Grand Prix, the native of Nice prevailed in Portugal and, with solid performances throughout the start of the season, is now the league leader. He is eight points ahead of Aleix Espargaro (122 points to 114). Enea Bastianini is third with 94 points, followed by Francesco Bagnaia (81 points) and Johann Zarco (75).
In 59 GPGP races, Fabio Quartararo has nine victories, 11 pole positions and has been on the podium 24 times.
“We don’t often meet a pilot of his caliber”
In a statement, Yamaha explained that ” Fabio had a special talent that even exceeded our expectations. Fabio is regular in his performance. He has a spirit of camaraderie and his good humor is contagious. We don’t often meet a pilot of his caliber ».
And the stable to conclude : “We know that Fabio will invest 100% and we have assured that Yamaha will do the same. We will be investing in future developments so that we can fight for the titles in the years to come. » Gain power while maintaining the legendary agility of the M1. Holy challenge.
